Bowser (sometimes known as King Koopa) is the main antagonist in the Mario games, supreme leader of the Koopa Troop and Mario's arch nemesis. He often kidnaps or tries to kidnap Princess Peach in order to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. Though on some occasions he has kidnapped Mario , Luigi and even sometimes Wario. Since his debut Bowser has appeared in almost every Mario game including main games, spin off and crossovers.

Creation[]

The character was created by Shigeru Miyamoto as the villain of Super Mario Bros. Miyamoto stated that they considered naming him either Kuppa, Yukke or Bibinba which are all Korean dishes as they are known in Japan. In the end Kuppa was chosen. However for the late North American version which also introduced the spelling koopa, the character was named Bowser.

Trivia[]

  • While King Koopa is not normally referred to as Bowser Koopa in Japan, there are occasions where it is eluded to. For example, in the Japanese version of Mario Kart Wii, his Bowser Bike is known as the Super Bowser. In addition, he still says the "royal Koopa line" in Super Mario Sunshine, meaning that Koopa is also his family name in Japan.
  • In the "How to Draw Ninetdo Heroes and Villains" book, Bowser is listed as Kerog
